Meena Karki bridges language and culture in her daily work as a lecturer in Chinese language and literature, bringing fluency in Mandarin and a deep appreciation for classical Chinese poetry to the next generation of Nepali scholars and diplomats.

Education and Language Training

Ms. Karki completed her bachelor’s degree in linguistics at Tribhuvan University before receiving a Chinese Government Scholarship to study at Beijing Language and Culture University, where she earned her master’s degree with distinction. Her thesis explored the pedagogical challenges of teaching Mandarin tonal systems to speakers of Nepali and other Indo-Aryan languages.

She holds HSK Level 6 certification and has completed advanced coursework in classical Chinese literature, modern Chinese film studies, and cross-cultural communication. Her years in Beijing gave her a firsthand understanding of Chinese academic culture that informs her teaching and mentoring at Kathmandu University.

Academic and Cultural Work

At Kathmandu University, Ms. Karki teaches introductory and advanced Mandarin courses, Chinese calligraphy, and a seminar on contemporary Chinese society. She has developed a curriculum that integrates cultural immersion components — including pen-pal exchanges with partner universities in Chengdu and Nanjing — to give students practical context for their language studies.

Beyond the classroom, she has translated two collections of Nepali short stories into Chinese, published through the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts. She regularly serves as an interpreter for visiting Chinese delegations and has facilitated cultural programming during the Chinese New Year celebrations hosted by the Academy.

Language is not merely grammar and vocabulary — it is the doorway to a civilization’s heart. When a Nepali student reads Li Bai in the original, something profound shifts in their understanding of what connects our two peoples.
