Sanjay Basnet operates at the intersection of commerce and diplomacy, leveraging his expertise in cross-border trade to strengthen the economic bonds between Nepal and China through practical partnerships and policy advocacy.

From Beijing Classrooms to Border Commerce

Mr. Basnet’s journey into Nepal-China economic cooperation began during his MBA studies at Renmin University of China, where he specialized in international trade and supply chain management. His time in Beijing — four years of immersion in Chinese business culture, language study, and a network of contacts across multiple provinces — laid the foundation for a career built on cross-Himalayan commerce.

Upon returning to Kathmandu, he established a consultancy practice focused on helping Nepali businesses navigate Chinese import-export regulations, identify manufacturing partners in Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces, and access trade financing through bilateral banking channels. His firm has facilitated over forty trade partnerships since its founding in 2012.

Trade Advocacy and Policy Work

As a board member of the Nepal-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Basnet has been a vocal advocate for streamlined customs procedures at the Rasuwagadhi and Tatopani border points. He contributed to the chamber’s 2023 position paper on transit trade modernization and has participated in three rounds of bilateral trade talks as a private-sector representative.

Key Focus Areas

  • Cross-border e-commerce facilitation
  • Nepali handicraft export promotion to Chinese markets

Academy Engagement

Mr. Basnet joined Nepal China Academy as a student member during his years in Beijing and transitioned to alumni membership upon his return. He chairs the Academy’s Trade Promotion Sub-committee and has organized annual trade cooperation conferences that bring together Nepali entrepreneurs, Chinese business delegations, and government officials to explore practical avenues for economic partnership.

Trade is the handshake that follows the conversation. The Academy creates the conversation — my work is to ensure the handshake leads to something lasting for both sides.
